At the beginning of the 2011/2012 campaign, both teams were pitted against each other in a similar two-legged tie in the UCL qualifying rounds- Malmo emerged victors 2-1 on aggregate.
All to play for in the first half of this tie
Malmo’s narrow 2-1 victory in the first leg of the second round was enough to book them a date with Rangers having held HJK to a 2-2 draw in the second leg. It’s is to be said that a lot more would be required to get the better of the Scottish Champions. The Swedish outfit is currently second in their domestic league, with just one point separating them from Djurgarden who lead the Swedish Allsvenskan.
Rangers are one of the two teams who enter the competition at this stage. They also kicked off their title defence last weekend with a comfortable 3-0 victory at home against Livingston. Having managed to knock Celtic off the Champions’ perch, all eyes would be on Steven Gerard to see if he can lead his side to the UCL for the first time since the 10/11 season.
Malmo vs Rangers Prediction: 1-1
Although Malmo is still going strong in the Swedish Allsvenskan, it is quite evident that it hasn’t been the same case in their UCL qualifying exploits. This would only be the Rangers’ second competitive game of the season, as such, they might have some issues settling into the game very early. However, we don’t see them losing to Malmo this Tuesday.
