Spain finished top of their group, managing to cop five points from a possible nine. La Fuente’s troops looked a little shaky in their opening game having played a goalless draw with Egypt. They quickly followed it up with a win against Australia before picking up one solitary point against Argentina. It is to be noted that Spaniards didn’t score more than a goal in their three group games. This could be likened to their slow start in the European Championship with La Roja getting better as the tournament went on.
Ivory Coast assembled quite a decent squad with the likes of Bailly, Kessie and Amad Diallo in their ranks. In a group consisting of the U-23 Brazil and Germany sides, the Ivorians did well to secure a second-place finish behind the defending champions Brazil while the Rio Olympic Games silver medalists exited from the group. Although it only gets tougher from here on, we fully expect them to give a good account of themselves in the remainder of the tournament.
