Every tournament sets records. But which clubs have managed to win the most Champions League titles?
1st Place: Real Madrid (14 victories)
Their performance in the Champions League matches their nickname "Los Blancos". Real Madrid had the honor of lifting the trophy 14 times. The last time was in May 2022. Thus, the Madrid team is the only team in the history of the Champions League to have won the competition more than ten times. Such winning streaks in football are rare.
2nd Place: AC Milan (7 victories)
The last victory of AC Milan in the Champions League dates back a while. In 2006/2007, the Italian club won the final in Athens with a 2:1 victory against FC Liverpool. AC Milan, then coached by Carlo Ancelotti, played with world superstars such as Kaká, Maldini, and Pirlo.
3rd Place: FC Liverpool (6 victories)
Jürgen Klopp managed to achieve the sixth Champions League title in the history of FC Liverpool in 2018/2019. In the all-British final, "the Reds" defeated their neighbors from Tottenham with 2:0.
3rd Place: Bayern München (6 victories)
Hansi Flick took over the leadership of FC Bayern in the 2019/2020 season and led the club directly to a treble. The highlight of this Champions League season was undoubtedly the memorable 8:2 victory against FC Barcelona in the quarter-finals. In the final, the Bavarians defeated Paris Saint-Germain with 1:0. The last time Bayern won the Champions League was in 2013, in a season when the Germans also won the cup and the Bundesliga.
5th Place: FC Barcelona (5 victories)
FC Barcelona had its glory days in the past: Not just since the departure of the club legend, Lionel Messi (34), the sporting performances of the Catalans have started to decline. In addition, the club is struggling with an enormous debt. In 2014/2015, Barcelona won the 5th and so far last Champions League title in the club's history.
6th Place: Ajax Amsterdam (4 victories)
In the 2018/2019 Champions League season, the Dutch were the surprise team. With great talents such as Matthijs De Ligt, Frenkie De Jong, and Hakim Ziyech, Ajax advanced to the semi-finals of the tournament with their impressive offensive play. In the semi-finals, Ajax Amsterdam was defeated by Tottenham.
7th Place: Inter Milan (3 victories)
The second major club from Milan has also managed to win the prestigious competition a few times. Last time, Inter Milan achieved this in the 2009/2010 season when they defeated FC Bayern with 2:0 in the final. Since then, Inter has been waiting for another success.
8th Place: Manchester United (3 victories)
Under the legendary coach Sir Alex Ferguson (80), Manchester United last won the Champions League. In the 2007/2008 season, they won against FC Chelsea in a penalty shootout. The young Cristiano Ronaldo was playing for the Red Devils at that time and became the season's top scorer with 8 goals. This year, they also finished first in the Premier League standings.
9th Place: FC Chelsea (2 victories)
FC Chelsea, under the leadership of Thomas Tuchel (48), won in 2021 in an all-English final against Manchester City with 1:0. Bayern fans probably still remember well the first Champions League title won by FC Chelsea: in 2011/2012, Bayern lost to FC Chelsea in a penalty shootout in the "home final".
