Football fans will certainly be looking forward to this weekend with a top-tier game in every single one of Europe's top five leagues. One of those games is at the German Bundesliga as Dortmund and Bayern do battle for all three points. Both sides are in 2nd and 1st position respectively, level on points after six games played, however, the Bavarians only lead via goal difference.
As expected, Bayern Munich has been the superior team taking into account their head-to-head record, and as well as trophies. Both sides were involved in the Super Cup just at the beginning of the season. The Bavarians ran out 3-2 winners as they added yet another trophy to their illustrious cabinet. No doubt, they would be keen on getting this victory that takes them clear of Dortmund and atop the table. Will the home side manage to grab their first league win over their opponents since 2018?
The Bavarians scoring for fun
Flick and his troops have averaged four goals per game in the league this season. They have scored almost twice as much as their opponents have managed after six league games played. It's the same case in the UEFA Champions League group stage with the defending champions netting six goals in three games. This only points to the fact that they would certainly take some stopping this season.
In their most recent league game against Koln, Muller and Gnabry were both on the scoresheet as they ran out 2-1 winners. Four days later, they put six past RB Salzburg in the UEFA Champions League. Just to illustrate how efficient this Bayern side is, at the 79th minute in Austria, the game was tied at 2-2. It was all Bayern Munich from then on as they copped their third win in as many games in the UCL.
Dortmund looking more resolute in defence
Although they haven't managed as many goals as the league leaders, due respect needs to be given to their defensive work. Dortmund has only conceded twice this season, with both goals coming in that 2-0 loss at Augsburg. It is then left to see how well they would manage Lewandowski and Co. this weekend.
A Matts Hummels brace sealed a 2-0 win for them against Arminia Bielefeld last weekend. With that win, they managed to keep up with the league leaders who are flying at the moment. Haaland was the star of the show in their matchday three games with a brace. Hazard has initially opened the scoring with the Norwegian following up with two relatively simple goals. It is then left to see how well they'd cope against the 2019/20 treble winners.
Borussia Dortmund vs Bayern Munich Team News
Alphonso Davies is set for quite a long time on the sidelines after tearing his ankle ligament. Matts Hummels is rated doubtful for this tie after suffering a hamstring injury against Arminia Bielefeld.
Borussia Dortmund possible starting XI:
Burki; Guerrero, Akanji, Witsel, Meunier; Delaney, Dahoud; Sancho, Reus, Hazard; Haaland
Bayern Munich possible starting XI:
Neuer; Hernandez, Boateng, Alaba, Pavard; Kimmich, Martinez; Sane, Muller, Gnabry, Lewandowski
Borussia Dortmund vs Bayern Munich Prediction: 1-2
We don't expect Borussia Dortmund's new defensive unit to shut out this Bayern side. Even the most defensive of defensive units in Atletico Madrid were hammered 4-0 by the Bavarians. However, Bayern has looked shaky at the back, therefore, we don't expect a clean sheet from them especially with Haaland in terrific goal-scoring form.
At the end of the day, however, we believe the away side gets this win to go three points clear of their opponents.
